The Mount Douglas Varsity Rams closed out their regular season Friday with an impressive 48 to 0 victory over cross town rival Belmont Bulldogs under the lights at Bear Mountain.

Alex Carroll led the scoring parade for the Rams with three touchdowns including two TD receptions from the arm of Tyler Fong.  Tyler also had a rushing major as did Dylan Iverson and Luc Ottosen.

Versatile linebacker/offensive lineman Byron Sharratt showed a running style reminiscent of a modern day Eric Dickerson and powered over the goal line for the final touchdown for the Rams.

Byron Sharratt was named Player of the Game for his dominant game on the defensive side of the ball, numerous tackles as well as his rushing major.

The Varsity Rams recorded a perfect 8 and 0 regular season record (7 and 0 in conference play) and look to continue their winning ways when they host their first playoff game either Friday, Nov. 20, or Saturday, Nov. 21 . . . stay tuned for details.

The Junior Varsity Rams ended their regular season Saturday with a 55 to 0 win over Mark Isfeld Seconday Ice from Courtenay.
With the victory, the Rams finished with an undefeated record of 9 and 0 (8 and 0 in conference play).

Eight different players scored touchdowns for the Rams.  Terrell Davis caught a touchdown pass from the arm of Jordan Deverill and also threw two TD strikes to Brian Dowds and Jordan Deverill respectively.

Mason Swift, Brett Johnston and the Brazilian Nightmare Marcelo Coelho each had a rushing major.  Jordan Deverill also threw a TD strike to Travis Johnson.

Special Teams also got in on the scoring as Connor Bryan recovered a blocked punt in the end zone thanks to the efforts of Mason Swift and James Bradley.

The Offensive Players of the Game after the Isfeld game were awarded to Brett Johnston and Matt Power.

Co-winners of the Defensive Players of the Game were Cassidy Jones and Mitch Ottosen.

Special Teams Players of the Game went to Connor Bryan and Travis Johnson.

The Overall Players of the  Game were awarded to Terrell Davis and Jordan Deverill for their dominant performances.

Five days later, Wednesday, the Junior Rams played their first round playoff game.  After an exchange of early touchdowns, the Rams dominated the contest en route to a 54 to 6 victory over Timberline Secondary School Wolves from Campbell River.

Terrell Davis scored three touchdowns (one on a kick-off return, one on an 80-yard run and one on a 50-yard catch and run from QB Jordan Deverill).

Erick Johnson had two majors (one rushing and one from the arm of Brett Johnston).  Mason Swift had a rushing TD of his own, as did Jordan Deverill and Brett Johnston.

The only Timberline score came on an early kick-off return for a touchdown, and needless to say the Rams defensive was stellar throughout the contest.

Mitch Pearse provided great pass coverage and for his efforts was named the Defensive Player of the Game.

The Offensive Player of the Game went to Erick Johnson for his two TD performance.

Cassidy Jones was named the Special Teams Player of the Game for his recovery of an early onside kick.  The Overall Player of the Game went to Terrell Davis for his spectacular performance on both sides on the football as well as on special teams.

Next up for the Junior Varsity Rams will be their second round quarter-final playoff game against Carson Graham Eagles from North Vancouver on Thursday Nov. 19 at 4 p.m. at Bear Mountain Stadium.

The Belmont Secondary School Bulldogs football team needs costly equipment, and a parent committee is organizing a beer and burger silent auction to help offset expenses.

In a letter to Victoria-area businesses seeking auction items or gift certificates, Belmont Football Mom Elise Pastro notes that Bulldogs Football is also Belmont’s largest school team sport with the club planning to suit up 80 players this season.

“Football is the only sport where the club has to provide all the certified equipment to ensure highest level of safety to all the players which proves to be extremely costly,” Pastro said.

“Team travel on and off the island to play mainland teams within our league also adds to the already extensive program budget.”

Coach Kevin Harrington has invited students to  try out for the teams, noting that practices are taking place over the summer.

Varsity and Junior Varsity training takes place 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. Mondays at Glen Lake Elementary School and Wednesdays at Belmont Secondary School. Training practice includes dynamic performance training at Belmont’s Spotswood Gym.

“No previous experience is required.”

The beer and burger silent auction fundraiser will be held at the Six Mile Pub from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sept. 19.

Six Mile will display posters listing all silent auction items two weeks in advance so their patrons will plan to attend.

“We will also list all contributors on our team website as a thank you,” Pastro said.
