About

History.

The Island Sports News newspaper was the dream and brain-child of Scott Harrigan. Like so many of us in Victoria, Scott was a bit despondent with the level of coverage for ‘Minor League’ sports events on Vancouver Island.

It seemed that the local newspapers could barely feed us with the news surrounding major sporting events such as the latest on the Vancouver Canucks, the Whitecaps and even his beloved Maple Leafs.

So to suppose that they could possibly pick up a story about an athlete from Oak Bay or Sooke that has broken all kinds of local records was just a pipe-dream.

After meeting with Charles La Vertu,  former reporter/editor with more than 40 years experience in communications, they set about creating the Island Sports News Network.

Charles is also a sixth-degree black belt, a senior instructor with Victoria Youth Karate in the James Bay Community Centre in Victoria, secretary of Karate BC (www.karatebc.org), secretary of the Vancouver Island Karate Society and president of the Wado Karate Association of Canada (www.wado.ca).

A Dream is Born!

Our Aim

Our aim at the Island Sports News Network is to bring you local sports news, not so much about the local big boys such as the Seals, Highlanders or the Salmon Kings (though we will cover them as well), but about actual LOCAL Vancouver Island sporting events!

Gee what a concept!

To be successful we need volunteer reporters and photographers, be they parents or participants or just plain spectators.

We hope enough enthusiasts who attend events week in and week out, will provide their take on what they saw.

There are many parents out there trampling the side lines at many an event, whether it be watching little Billy play his junior league hockey game, or Sarah who has just made the trials for the BC ladies soccer side.

If it’s happening we want to know about it.

It’s A Community Thing!

We NEED YOU

Why not become a participating member in Victoria’s newest monthly sporting publication and tell us your story. We are hoping to get involvement from everybody across the island and are planning a lot of features in the newspaper such as:

  • Coach’s Corner.
  • Kids’ Corner.
  • Ask the Doctor.
  • Where are they now.
  • Player of the month.
  • Coach of the month.

Plus lots of interviews and pictures for young and old.
